THEY put their bodies through as much hardship as any athlete, but how well are UFC fighters compensated for getting beaten up on a daily basis?
According to top-10 ranked lightweight fighter Myles Jury, not much, especially if you’re on the undercard.
Jury posted a detailed breakdown of the fight purses and expenses of entry-level UFC competitors on his blog this week, revealing some took away as little as $1500 after outlaying all their costs.
Inexperienced fighters are generally offered around $10,000 to compete when they enter the UFC, a figure that doubles if they are victorious.
But Jury revealed how quickly these earnings disappeared after paying gym costs, coaches, management, medical bills and taxes.
Instead of paying monthly membership fees, professional fighters pay on a per fight basis for each training camp. The gym will take a percentage of the fighter’s winnings and extra cash is also paid to specialised coaches who charge up to $150 an hour for expert training in disciplines like jiu jitsu, wrestling and striking.
The fighter is also responsible for paying to fly their coach and training partner to the city of the fight as well as other miscellaneous costs like massages and supplements.
This is what they earn according to Jury.

“As you should’ve noticed, a whole team loses when their fighter loses. Not only emotionally and physically, but financially as well,” Jury said.
“Anyone that thinks this is an easy business for a fighter is sadly mistaken. As you can see from the breakdown above, there are a lot of expenses that go into a high level training camp.

“Although there’s a lot of money to be made in the sport of MMA, there are a lot of expenses just like most businesses.”
It’s important to note Jury’s breakdown is based purely on the purse a fighter is paid by the UFC and doesn’t include other sources of income like the organisation’s sponsorship deal with Reebok — which sees fighters earn anywhere from $2500 to $20,000 per fight depending on their experience — and individual sponsorship agreements. They can also earn bonuses on fight night for standout performances.
It’s also specific to fighters still making their way in the sport. Headliners can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars per fight while the UFC’s biggest star — Irish featherweight Conor McGregor — recently claimed he was set to sign a $100 million contract with the company.
